Five Ways Self-Love Helps Others

It’s February, the month of L-O-V-E, and the emphasis this time of year is usually around expressing love to others.

Well, today I want to focus on you expressing love to Y-O-U! I want to give you permission (if you need it) to make time for the love and care of yourself in the midst of (and maybe even before) caring for others.

With nearly every client or workshop participant I work with, the resistance to making self-care (aka self-love) a priority comes up. Why? Because we have been taught to believe that taking care of others first is self-less, kind and the “good” thing to do.

Why is this a problem? Because if taking care of others and expressing love to everyone else is more of a priority than caring for and loving yourself, you will always be operating at a deficit.

And what does a self-love deficit look like?

  • Exhaustion

  • Overwhelm

  • Frustration

  • Resentment

  • Illness

  • Depression

Often I find that when a client looks as self-love via self-care as a way to better give to others, they find it easier to make the time for the things that fill them up.

Want to know how caring for yourself and directing some of that love to Y-O-U will in turn benefit those around you?

Here are five ways that caring for yourself actually helps others:

  1. You will be more positive and pleasant.

  2. You will be happier and healthier.

  3. You will have more patience and presence.

  4. You will be more energetic and enthusiastic.

  5. You will serve as an example and role model.

Remember, taking care of yourself is not a selfish act. Making time to do things that fill you up, renew you, energize you, keep you healthy and happy are acts of LOVE (for YOU and those around you).

What do you think? I’d love to hear from you. Whether you are someone who does make self-care a priority and has experience with how it impacts the way you show up for others, or whether you are someone who falls short in this area and would like to make some changes, what are your thoughts on this topic?
